Signs Out of Time examines the life and work of world-renowned archaeologist Dr. Marija Gimbutas. Drawing from her extensive knowledge of mythology and linguistics, Lithuanian-born Gimbutas uncovered the life-affirming and goddess-worshiping civilizations of pre-historic “Old Europe.” Weaving together footage of Gimbutas herself, as well as interviews with her supporters and critics, Signs Out of Time reveals a visionary scholar whose theories challenged the “establishment” of her time and influenced a generation of scholars, feminists, and social thinkers.
“Archaeological materials are not mute. They speak their own language. And they need
to be used for the great source they are to help unravel the spirituality of those of our
ancestors who predate the Indo-Europeans by many thousands of years.”
- Marija Gimbutas
“Through an understanding of what the Goddess was, we can better understand
nature and we can build our ideologies so it will be easier for us to live.”
- Marija Gimbutas

The life and work of Dr. Marija Gimbutas is the subject of this superbly produced specialty documentary by filmmaker Donna Read and author/activist Starhawk. A Lithuanian-born anthropologist who fled the Soviet Union, immigrating to the United States in 1949, Gimbutas joined the faculty at UCLA in 1963. From 1967 to1980, she excavated sites throughout southeastern Europe, uncovering thousands of artifacts, primarily pottery and figurines, from an agricultural Neolithic culture that predated Indo-European civilizations. Based on her findings in the field, Gimbutas introduced the term “Old Europe” and theorized that it was a female-centered, peaceful, goddess-worshipping society. In bridging mythology with archaeology, Gimbutas’ work is widely acknowledged as pioneering but not without controversy.
Expertly told through the narration of actor Olympia Dukakis, the film presents a story of a woman who was passionate about her subject. The film includes extensive archival footage and interviews with colleagues and critics and is divided into 5 chapters: Introduction; A New Origin Story; Archaeology, Theology and Myth; The Language of the Goddess; and Marija’s Way. Additional special features on the DVD include excerpts from Donna Read’s Women and Spirituality series and a short clip describing the work of co-producer Starhawk, a modern witch who honors nature and the earth.
Author of numerous books and articles on Old Europe and Goddess religion, Gimbutas work influenced a generation of feminists and other scholars. Students of anthropology, archaeology and women’s studies will find both the woman and her work compelling subjects. Highly recommended.
