Secrets of the Soul

November 14th, 2008  |  by Alive Mind Education  |  published in Films Q-S, Secrets of the Soul

Secrets of the Soul takes an all encompassing look at the universal belief in the soul. Whether Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim or Native American, all religions claim a divine and eternal essence, a spirit that survives after the physical body dies. From the older tradition of the Native American Vision Quest to mediums who claim to be able to communicate with the dead, this two-hour special explores the beliefs and rituals of the faithful as well as the latest scientific research that investigates the soul’s very existence.

Secrets of the Soul provides a provocative overview of man’s various attempts to answer the age-old question: what happens to our souls when we die? Do we go to heaven… or hell? Are our souls ‘recycled’? Is our next life determined by our actions in this life? Or do we simply cease to exist, Ashes to ashes, dust to dust? Secrets of the Soul explores all of these questions, asking priests, imams, scientists and skeptics about their beliefs.

“The DVD Secrets of the Soul was incredible!!! I was taken aback by the sensitivity used to film the program and how historical it was. I learned so much watching it and it made me reflect deeper also on my own as well as other’s souls. The section most dear to me was the Near Death experiences. I felt validated by the woman’s story. Thank you for sharing this DVD with me. ”
-Mary Jo Rapini

“A DVD that is an artistic triumph. It combines and contrasts various points of view in an entertaining and instructive way. I hope that the resulting DVD reaches many, many people and that it encourages them to engage in reflective thought as well as active questing in both their internal and external worlds.”
-Stanley Krippner, Ph.D. (Featured Expert)

The tagline “An all encompassing look at the search for the soul” is decidedly congruous with respect to this film, Secrets of the Soul. The diversity of source information varies from the ancient Greeks to Siddhartha to early Native Americans to very recent medical research. New theories and old stories contribute to the virtually bias-free investigation of man’s centuries old questions regarding the human soul. This non-biased approach continues in discussions about soul or no soul, religion versus science, and from one religious explanation to another. The film is well paced with little repetition of information (notoriously present in too many educational television episodes), contains appropriate animations and special effects, and is technically sound including the lighting, script, videography, and sound. All theories are offered respectful treatment despite some distant departures from conventional science or mainstream thinking. Useful for comprehensive religious collections and broad philosophy collections. Highly recommended.

"The film juxtaposes footage ....with discussions of “soul force,” defined as the spiritually-motivated, nonviolent forms of resistance associated with Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., among others. A solid discussion starter, Fierce Light is recommended."

"...The Gates makes clear that a lot of folk found Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s Central Park enterprise both beautiful and moving. Recommended.

"Narcissistic or not, the breakthroughs experienced by some of the participants seem real enough, although Morgan neglects to disclose how much individuals paid for the privilege. The Workshop is recommended for academic human sexuality studies."
